Position Objectives:
The City Planner’s primary objective is to support orderly, quality growth and development within the City of Columbus through the consistent and professional administration of the City’s land use regulations and long-range planning documents. This position serves as a key technical and advisory resource to the Planning Commission, Park Board, City Council, staff, applicants, and the public by reviewing development proposals, interpreting ordinances, and preparing clear, defensible recommendations. The City Planner facilitates an efficient and transparent development review process by coordinating with property owners, consultants, and regulatory agencies, responding to public inquiries, and maintaining accurate planning records and data. Through effective communication, sound judgment, and attention to detail, the City Planner helps ensure that development decisions align with the City’s Comprehensive Plan, protect the public interest, and contribute to the community’s long-term livability, functionality, and economic vitality.
Duties and Responsibilities:
The City Planner is responsible for administering and enforcing the City’s land use ordinances and Comprehensive Plan by reviewing development applications for zoning and regulatory compliance, including plats, site plans, rezonings, variances, conditional and interim use permits, and related land use requests. The position coordinates the development review process with applicants, property owners, consultants, and City departments; prepares staff reports, findings of fact, and professional recommendations; and presents information to the Planning Commission, Park Board, and City Council. Responsibilities also include responding to public inquiries regarding zoning and land use requirements; preparing public notices, maps, and planning documents; maintaining accurate land use and GIS records; tracking planning activity; and providing staff support for meetings, including agenda preparation, packet assembly, attendance, and minute-taking. The City Planner also supports long-range planning initiatives, including maintenance of the Comprehensive Plan and Park Master Plan, and performs related duties as assigned.
Minimum Requirements:
The City Planner position requires a bachelor’s degree in urban planning, community development, geography, or a closely related field, along with three to five years of progressively responsible experience in land use planning, zoning administration, development review, or a related municipal planning function, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Candidates must demonstrate working knowledge of planning principles and practices, including zoning and subdivision regulations, site plan review, and interpretation of ordinances and codes. Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications and experience using GIS software are required, as is the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and meet deadlines. Strong written and verbal communication skills are essential, along with the ability to interact professionally with the public, elected officials, boards and commissions, and consultants. Local government experience is preferred. A master’s degree in a related field and AICP certification or active membership are desirable. A valid driver’s license and safe driving record are required.
